Instructions for Conventional Projects (electronic submission)

This page contains instructions for preparing and submitting your manuscript for the production phase of publication at Princeton University Press. These instructions were designed for electronic submission of manuscripts text written using Word, WordPerfect, or other word processing program, accompanied by submission of hard copy for any illustrations.

The electronic method is not well suited to certain types of projects. If your manuscript contains non-standard ASCII symbols or non-Roman alphabets, you must follow the instructions for conventional manuscripts (submission via mail). (Standard ASCII symbols are those which are found solely in Romance languages and German; non-standard ASCII symbols are found in, for instance, Hungarian, Old English, Turkish, Yoruba, transliterated Japanese or Greek, etc. Non-roman alphabets include Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Russian, etc.—any language that needs to be transliterated into English.)

You will need to prepare your manuscript to meet the following requirements:

  • Illustrations Meet Quality Standards

Need help with illustrations? Contact our illustration specialist, Dimitri Karetnikov (dimitri_karetnikov at press.princeton.edu).

You will need to submit the following materials:

  • Manuscript
    • complete text file(s)
      We need everything from the title page to the bibliography.
      Format the text double-spaced, in 12pt font.

    • illustration captions file
      We will place these with your illustrations during typesetting.

    • tables file(s)
      One table per page, please.

    • individual electronic files for digital illustrations
      Both so that we can do a quality check and so that we can use them to produce the book.

    • hard copy for all illustrations
      Please send printouts of all digital illustrations, the original non-digital art (slide, glossy, etc.), and photocopies of all non-digital art to the postal mailing address below.

  • Permissions Documentation

    • copies of all permission documents
      We absolutely need copies of any correspondence from rights-holders you have contacted.

  • Satellite Documents

    Please submit these forms in electronic format.

  • .zip (Windows PCs and newer Macs)
  • .sit (older Macs)
  • .tgz or .tar.gz (Unix machines)
