The Divine Comedy

Translated with a Commentary by Charles S. Singleton

Dante's great masterpiece in a prose translation, with an extensive commentary, virtually line by line, that draws upon all the most important scholarship relating to the composition of the poem, contemporary politics, art theology, philosophy, and Dante's life. The most authoritative Italian text, edited by Giorgio Petrocchi, is printed facing Professor Singleton's translation. The commentary to each cantica is in an accompanying volume, with maps, diagrams, and other illustrations that aid the reader's understanding and knowledge, as do an abundance of quotations from original sources.
