Mission Statement

Our fundamental mission is to disseminate scholarship both within academia and to society at large. We select for publication only scholarship of the highest quality on all levels regardless of commercial viability: specialized monographs making an original contribution to knowledge within a subdiscipline; titles appealing to a broader range of scholars and professionals in a single discipline; interdisciplinary academic works intended for readers in more than one subject area; and works by scholars aimed at bringing the findings of a discipline to the larger, well-educated reading public.

Our mission in publishing mathematics books follows directly from the mission statement of Princeton University Press above. It is our intention to advance scholarship across a broad range of mathematical sciences, both theoretical and applied. Our books are always of the highest quality, whether they are specialized monographs or works written for a broad reading public. At the start of a new millennium, we are actively expanding our publishing program in mathematics. At the same time, we remain fully committed to our goal of advancing knowledge and we will continue to maintain the high standards for which our books are known throughout the world.

Our mathematics editors are involved in every stage of a book's production, from providing advice to authors to overseeing the final editing of the text itself; from consulting on a book's design to collaborating on its marketing. This active involvement pays off in many ways, from worldwide sales to authors' satisfaction. Authors frequently report that their publishing experiences at Princeton are their most rewarding.

Princeton University Press is an independent not-for-profit book publishing company. Because we do not have all of the financial pressures of commercial publishers, we are able to fund works of indisputable academic worth without considering their profit potential. In addition, we can and do use our financial resources to keep the prices of our books competitive and affordable.

This site is designed to provide access to the broad scope of our mathematics publishing program. Information about books in other fields is available from press.princeton.edu.
