Seahorses are instantly recognisable and have been a part of our culture for millennia, yet we still know very little about these enigmatic creatures.
Steve Trewhella and Julie Hatcher have spent hundreds of hours in British waters observing native seahorses, witnessing at first hand how they behave in the wild, and how they interact with the other plants and animals in their underwater realm.
With stunning photography, In the Company of Seahorses paints a rich picture of a mysterious world amongst swaying seagrass and colourful seaweeds. The accompanying text is packed with personal anecdotes describing the authors’ journey of discovery, illustrating for the first time the secretive lives of these elusive animals in British waters.
By sharing one couple’s passion for an entrancing ocean icon, this book aims to inspire, inform and create a better understanding of the seahorse and its often vulnerable habitats around the British coastline.
Steve Trewhella is a diver and photographer, specialising in the photography of British marine life above and below the waves. He is also a keen naturalist with a particular interest in the coast and sea.
Julie Hatcher is a marine biologist working in conservation in Dorset. Her work involves raising awareness of marine and coastal wildlife in the UK. Steve and Julie met in 2004 through a shared passion for exploring the underwater environment. They married in 2013 and live on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset.
"Testament to the years the authors have spent uncovering the secret lives of seahorses in Studland Bay, this book strikes a nice balance betweeen image and text - on natural history, modern threats and the myriad other species with which these creatures share their watery home."—Matt Doggett, BBC Wildlife
"The words of the book . . . . are clear, concise and very informative. This is a beautifully produced book too, in terms of layout, typography and the always-excellent line drawingsof Marc Dando. It captures in print a great British underwater asset"—Steve Weinman, Diver Magazine
"In the Company of Seahorses will be a must-have for marine conservationists and will interest most marine biologists. It should be in every marine biology library and on every coffee table."—Barrington Woodcock, The Marine Biologist
