Nobel laureate Shiller’s new book is based on the simple proposition that the stories people tell affect economic outcomes. Whether true or false, stories such as the belief that tech markets can only go up or that some firms are too big to fail influence decisions about spending, saving, and investing—and by doing so, they drive the economy. As such stories go viral and reach larger audiences, their impact is all the greater, and Shiller, Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale and author of the classic Irrational Exuberance, demonstrates how this new “narrative economics” can help improve our ability to predict, prepare for, and lessen the damage of major economic events.
