Upon today’s announcement that Dr. James Peebles is the joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2019, Princeton University Press would like to extend warmest congratulations. Along with Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, the Royal Swedish Academy recognizes Dr. Peebles, a Princeton University professor and Princeton University Press author for “contributions to our understanding of the evolution of our universe and Earth’s place in the cosmos.”
According to the Academy, “James Peebles took on the cosmos, with its billions of galaxies and galaxy clusters. His theoretical framework, developed over two decades, is the foundation of our modern understanding of the universe’s history, from the Big Bang to the present day.”
Princeton University Press is honored to be the publisher of several books by Dr. Peebles, including Principles of Physical Cosmology, Physical Cosmology, Large-Scale Structure of the Universe, and Quantum Mechanics, all considered classics in the field. The Press will publish Dr. Peebles’s Cosmology’s Century: An Inside History of Our Modern Understanding of the Universe in June 2020.
Peebles is the Albert Einstein Professor of Science, emeritus, and professor of physics, emeritus, at Princeton University. He is one of the leading theoretical cosmologists of the past half century. With Robert Dicke, he was one of the predictors of the cosmic microwave background – the ultimate detection of which substantiated the Big Bang theory – and also made fundamental contributions to our understanding of cosmic structure formation, dark matter, and dark energy.
According to Christie Henry, director of Princeton University Press, “The Nobel Prize recipients in physics this year have ‘forever changed our conceptions of the world,’ and we are also celebrating the innumerable ways that Professor Peebles has forever changed the cosmology of Princeton University Press and the universe of scholarly book publishing.”
Beginning with the 1922 publication of Albert Einstein’s The Meaning of Relativity, Princeton University Press has remained committed to publishing global thought leaders in the sciences and beyond. We are honored to count Dr. Peebles’s essential work as part of this legacy.
Peebles joins a number of other Princeton University Press authors who have been awarded Nobel Prizes.
